So,

Do you allow them?

Do you filter or monitor them in any way?

The issue I'm trying to address is - how would we know if a pupil was exchanging emails with any person that they are not supposed to be having contact with "via their school email account"?

Advice welcome - particularly applicably to Microsoft cloudy exchange.

We have mail rules to disallow student to student and student to external communications. Students are allowed to receive emails from external senders that on an allowed domain list (UCAS for example).

We allow external email but use Barracuda Email Gateway Defense alongside their Impersonation Protection and Incident Response products. Their Cloud Archiving Services is also included. In my experience, school email is the last service that students will choose to use but, if they do, we have a full audit trail of all communications.

We block student to student communication and enforce a configured whitelist of safe senders that are allowed to communicate with student email addresses. If students send emails to anyone not on the safe list they get a bounce back.
