Confused about 3Com POE switch

Hi all

 

We recently had a new IT build that was completely out of our control and we had little say over the back end kit that was supplied. Needless to say we usually do all the procurement ourselves and it all works but this time it was done for us the the LEA and we've had all sorts of problems.

 

The one thing I need clarification on it the switch situation they've left us in.

 

We had supplied 2 x 3COM 5500G-EI (3CR17255-91) 48 port and 24 port and on the front they say POE. The problem is we cannot get POE enabled at all on any ports.

 

When we go to the console it and use the POE link it tells us "POE is not supported on the equipment or the port".

 

A quick look at the manual indicates that we might need a separate module to make POE work but I'm a bit unsure on this and cannot find a definitive answer. Some sites say that the POE only needs an add in if the existing POE devices are drawing too much power and I can't find the part number to check (the manual lists some numbers but when searched for they do not appear to be what I want but could be this).

 

I have managed to get POE working by adding one of our own switches to the cab but this has to be put back soon and I need the supplied ones to work.

 

Hope you guys can shed some light on this.

The equipment that you have plugged in must support the poe standard which will tell the switch to supply juice to them otherwise you could fry something.

 

You normally only an extra psu to supply full poe power to all 48 ports on the bigger switch.

I'm plugging in fully compiant Aruba wireless APs amongst other CCTV stuff. These work on the other POE switch I blagged which is a 3Com SuperStack 3 4500.

Have you upgraded to the latest firmware (needs at least Release V03.02.04) for the switch and also updated the POE power processing file file:

Update PoE board successfully

 

The other thing to check is that you have enabled PoE legacy mode:

This looks like the command you want to check the PSU:

display poe power supply

Purpose Use the display poe powersupply command to view the parameters of the power

sourcing equipment (PSE).

Syntax display poe powersupply

Parameters None

Example Display the PSE parameters.

with 3com kit it will have -pwr at the end of the product code if it is out of the box poe. I have 5 of the 5500gEi and there not poe normally, so you do have to buy the expansion module. Sorry .

 

But on the up side the 48 port all gigabit switch is a really good one. There is also an expantion port to take the backbone up to 10gb
