Morning,

 

Just wanted to check if anyone else is on BT and can let me know what speeds to expect.

 

We recently had a backup line installed and migrated to a 1GB/1GB linebut since then the speeds aren't great with our BT Net phones being really laggy.

 

 

They've asked me to plug directly into the Cisco router which is where these speeds come from.

 

They did sent an openreach tech out to test the line. He looked at the new fibre and said he could test that as it was terminated into a ONT but couldn't work out how to test the existing line as there wasn't an ONT.. it's a direct Fibre into an Adva. All new to me this setup but very frustrating. I actually thought I'd have 2 external ports from my Smoothwall to the new routers sperately but its setup where theres a switch inbetween and both routers share the gateway... when it sees one line down the other one kicks in. It was testing and the redundancy works... just strange.

 

Pretty abysmal service tbh from start to finish, really wish we'd have gone somewhere else.

Ugh, I know someone who ordered BTNet and didnt really understand what it was until it was installed. They didnt opt for the Cisco as it cost a fortune extra per month and they asked me if I had any clue. I got photos from them showing the Adva and the fibre but they didnt know how to hook it up (and couldnt as the Adva ethernet port is disabled unless < 100mb I believe) so I found them a media converter and fibre cable on amazon which got it working. There have a pretty old Draytek which really cant handle the 500mb they have (less the speed, more the devices) but they get pretty close to the line rate they pay for.

BTNet should have a decent SLA.

Are you plugging smoothwall into the Cisco I take it?

The Adva has fibre coming in then fibre going out into the Cisco router. The fibre patch cable is massive so i swapped it for a new one. 

 

I've never seen these trays before I started here so not sure if they should be this way.

Yeah those are fine and not to touch, basically anything other than the port you have in adva is managed/owned by BT like a master socket, I dont know if that goes to the cisco though on your end.

If you plug in direct to the Cisco port (obv out of hours) and run tests there is the speed still slow?

Yep, still really slow.

 

They said they did some testing last night (twice) and to retest but still slow.  I would have hoped even through the Smoothwall it would show some improvement

I am wondering if your line is under the wrong speed profile. It really shouldn’t be that slow and if it’s all their equipment I would raise hell for the sla.

Its either a coincidence or the magic of posting on Edugeek but something has happened all of a sudden

As a footnote, BT said they update the policy the day before and everything was configured correctly. 

 

Now either someone is telling fibs or their policies take 12 hours to apply. I think someone didn't press run on their end and they don't want to get into trouble.

Does anyone know if you still need to do this on the BTnet wires-only service?

Those spice trays used to come with ST connector; this was in the day of the old BT NTE100 grey box, but now they come with SC.
