Are desktops now more expensive than laptops

My charity has been purchasing laptops, approximate spec, 17", 16GB, reasonable size SSD and around about a current series i5. A while ago my LMs, LM switched to HP (had a contact) in part as he found the Dell voucher code unwieldy and unconvincing. I think last time I heard they were coming in for around £700-800. We have now decide we need two devices in the office and defaulted to HP. They came back and their least expensive proposal was HP SFF 400 G9 Business Desktop - specs being 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, i5-14500 just over £1000. The idea was dropped at that point! All prices are incl. VAT.

 

I have resurrected ithe topic! I have agreement to consider other manufacturer's, and a first, willingness to consider a refurbished device with 3 year warranty. @ICTDirect_Dave, this maybe your chance! Just 2 devices though and I will need to understand the output conncetions as they will want to reuse current monitors - I can find out what they have, could be VGA! Hopefully though, HDMI or DisplayPort.

You can buy mini PCs on Amazon for around £200 - £300 - I'm not sure if you can consistantly buy larger numbers or depend on the same model being avilable, but the ones I've used seem reasonable enough.

Our MSP don't manage our Windows estate to the level I would like to see, the idea of them managing Macs too isn't something I'd advocate. Besides, about two thirds of staff are shortly being forced to use a NHS targeted legacy application, that I know makes use of Java, and is not compatible with MacOS as far as I know. But on the point of price, I agree it's way too high, and I have already found a 25% lower cost point for the same kit, both on Amazon and other providers! It's odd, but I just don't think the HP sales contact wants this business, unless it's at a premium price.

Yeah sorry, I didn't mean it in the way of "You should get 2 Mac Mini's instead" my bad - hadn't had my morning coffee yet lol...!

 

I was just surprised, as I would want higher spec than that for £1000.

Are you buying direct from HP? Many years ago we switched from buying direct to going through a reseller, as it seems the academic discounts don't appear to be available direct, and certainly you don't get the Brighter Futures cashback, either.

it says HP store in Amazon, but this could be a no real stock issue.

Ignore where it says "Visit the HP Store" at the top, that's just a link to all listings for that manufacturer on Amazon. To see the seller & shipping details, you have to check the right-hand sidebar. Kinda misleading, but that's modern Amazon for you.
