Smoothwall Monitor - is this deployed out to users or devices

A really quick question.

 

Is Smoothwall monitor deployed out to users via USERS and BROWSER SETTINGS or DEVICE SETTINGS as there seems to be a bit of confusion.

Assuming you are on about Chromebooks, then it is deployed as User.

If it is windows with Group Policy, then Registry Settings and Application by Device Settings and the Extension to Edge and Chrome via User settings

Yup, sorry, it's related to chromebooks.

The documentation from Smoothwall doesn't really make it clear if it is USER or DEVICE.

Chromebooks always deploy extensions/apps as user never Device. 

The way I understand it is this:

Device - Everything that is before the user logs into the chromebook

User - Everything once a user has logged in

That's technically not true anymore. As a general rule yes, but you can also deploy to the browser now if you have Chrome Enterprise Core.

Thanks, am I right in thinking that even though the extension is installed in the browser, it still monitors apps on the chromebook rather than just in the browser?

 

As for the windows machines, am I right in thinking the extension needs to be pushed out to the browser of the local machine as we push extensions out to machines via Group Policy.

The extension is sandboxed in the browser, so it isn't monitoring Android apps, Linux or system level tools. The general rule with Android apps we follow is to avoid pushing them out if they have a browser contained within them.

Windows wise, I'd push them directly from Admin Console as long as the browser is enrolled.

Some good advice on here: yes, on chromebooks you are limited to the browser, and while it is possible to do device level controls, we push as user (we are working with google on what to do with the rest of android). 

Windows it is device level - you don't currently need a monitor browser extension for win, just the msi
