I have 3 Dell r740 with iDrac9 licensed and have a puzzling question.

Should the storage show even when the server is powered off?

I've mainly used iLO, so not fully use to iDrac.

Storage shows in iDrac when servers are powered (Booted) on but soon as powered down I am seeing no drives and the this message

They are connected to a HBA 300 (non-Raid) controller, so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Powered on I see the drives and they are listed in the summary and Physical Disks

Soon as I power down I get this

Quote

RAC0503: There are no out-of-band capable or re-configurable controllers to be displayed.
1. Make sure that the latest iDRAC firmware is installed.
2. Reset iDRAC to its initial state. To reset, click Maintenance > Diagnostics > Reset iDRAC to Factory Defaults. Else, run the RACADM command at the Command Line Interface (CLI): racadm racresetcfg.
3. Restart the server. To restart, click Configuration > Power Management > Power Control > Power Cycle System (cold boot). Else, run the RACADM command at the Command Line Interface (CLI): racadm serveraction powercycle.
4. Make sure that the host server is powered on.

They disappear and do not even show under Physical Disks - even the controllers disappear!

Is this a call to Dell or is this normal behaviour?

Cheers

I believe this is normal behaviour, it has to be powered on to see the config. We have a few Dell servers that does the same.
