Vista licence costs

I am now in the position where Vista is now making in roads onto my network. To this end I need 2x Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade licences. If anyone had brought these can you please let me know where you got them and what you paid please?

Just found out from ugh that Microsoft don't do a Vista Ultimate upgrade and don't offer educational discount on it either (apparently) so its £310.

Looks like they've just missed out on some sales then.

I know it does not help in your situation but if your are under MS volume liscencing and have SA you can use Ultimate instead of enterprise with the same Vista business liscences instead of installing Enterprise.

Why would you want Ultimate rather than Business anyway? What extra features do you need?

Plus you still need to ask for the keys, and they are individual :/

Why? Many of them work heavily in video and for display purposes it would be ideal, especially if they can use the Videos folder in their user profile as a repository (and it would stop them randomly scattering video all over their hard drives and user area!).

So now the so-called video consultants you use don't know how to manage their files or know how to organize their video workflows ?? Are you being serious....you want MCE for a 'videos' folder because your concerned that your 'consultants' will just dump the files anywhere.....how much are you paying these people ?? What's wrong with instructing them what to do and where to store files if your employer is paying their daily rates ? And no video professional i know relies or needs MCE for anything...then again most of the video pros i know work in OSX/FCP but that's a different story. Sometimes i despair with the use of the word 'consultant' sometimes in the field of video editing people think it's ok to apply it to someone who's a bit handy with a camcorder.

I'm not sure. It is still avalible for all PCs under our agreement at present. You are correct about the individual keys though which is a pain if you are installing in bulk.

You misunderstand. Most of our consultants spend a lot of their time giving presentations and teaching the teachers. We simply wanted media centre because it is a neat way to tie up your videos and presentations instead of digging down though many levels. As I posted earlier, the cost IS prohibitive, and we'd have needed the AD integration too.

All future laptops would be brought with it on though as it is only an extra £60 (on Dells site) on top of home basic (the pointless version).

Try media-portal or meedio, both are great free alternatives to MCE.
