Bromcom in use for Safeguarding?

Hi all,

We're not having much joy finding a MAT that uses the Safeguarding module of Bromcom instead of bespoke Safeguarding spftware.

Anyone willing to share any experiences of using Bromcom for safeguarding data and how you find it with us please? We are at a tad short notice for a potential move from our existing provider.

myconcern was very tight with bromcom last I checked, CPOMS is also the other big player.

 

I don't think bromcom or any MIS is ever as good as a dedicated 3rd party product - but the question is really "is it good enough?"

I've just had another look a the safeguarding bits on student records in Bromcom - it's not bad at all for recording stuff - but it doesn't appear to have the granular access rights control that CPOMS/MyConcern would offer, or the notications and case management stuff.

I'd advocate that the safeguarding element is too important to leave to software that can't do it justice. For now I can't see bromcom doing a good enough job to eliminate the 3rd part options.

Isn't this mostly down to the idea that child protection records must be kept separately from a child's main file?
Now, I know this is technically true with permissions etc, but I'd imagine a lot of schools take that to mean a completely separate third party system, ie CPOMS or a MyConcern.

^ There's also the issue that Bromcom (like every MIS I've used) only has 3 levels of permission for student files:

• Anyone with access to student data in Bromcom login can see them (Public)
• Anyone with a specific permission (usually tied to a limited group) can see them (Confidential)
• Only the person who puts them on can see them (Private) and no-one else knows they exists if they're hit by a bus (effectively useless).

 

When most safeguarding platforms allow more granularity, including on a incident-by-incident basis.

Definitely worth asking this on community.bromcom.com. A lot of MATs frequent it and may be able to offer some guidance.  

  

One chooses an integrated system like Bromcom because it's integrated, the costs are lower and its easier to control. I don't think you'll find anyone arguing that the use of 3rd parties (not just in safeguarding) doesn't offer wider scope, functionality, granularity etc.. But who wants several separate sets of training, SLAs, supplier contracts, relationships etc. etc. etc. anyway?

 

Comes down to what your goals, priorities and what you will compromise on.

While accurate for digital file storage within the core student record, not strictly correct for Safeguarding content.
Our student record has a lot of access rights controls independent for each section therein.
This is the case for the safeguarding section. So a user could be granted full access to everything in the student record "except" safeguarding if you would so wish.
Safeguarding access, at least on the demo systems I operate on, have 3 levels of access - None, user and lead (well 4 if you also consider the hybrid access of safeguarding practitioner which is essentially a defacto lead but only for specific students). This enables degrees of access on an incident by incident/action basis which will also impact any documentation attached to the incident/action.

But on MyConcern (for example), a member of the safeguarding team(s) can tag me into specific safeguarding cases to add notes / data (usually, "what's Fred been searching for?") without needing to give me wider permissions beyond "can report concerns about children".

I can choose to add additional users to grant access to specific incidents/actions within our own solution. This is in addition to any specific user role permissions.
