Mirror Casting issues!!

Hiya,

 

My school use mirror-casting on a wide basis in the classrooms, halls and conference rooms. We are continuously encountering issues with these. For example I had an issue today where i couldn't get a Microsoft display caster working at all, wouldn't connect on any laptop i tried. I plugged a different one in and that one was fine. i left the room knowing it was working and when a visitor connected it played up.. probably because there were updates on the laptop. 

 

then the original wireless caster worked fine for someone else up in the office later on that day.

 

we are continuously being called to issues similar to this, does anyone know why we might be encountering so many issues or is the technology just not reliable? have other school had these issues with a wireless casting setup and did anyone manage to fix or find a good solution or setup to these issues?

 

would be keen to find out.

We use screenbeam devices as miracast receivers and have one in every class. All our efforts, which have been extensive, to make them work reliably have been in vain. We even went to the lengths of replacing the WiFi cards in 60+ laptops. This has improved things, but only marginally. Some WiFi cards are known to have issues with miracast, such as the Mediatek RZ616 (which we replaced).

 

They work when they feel like it, with no particular pattern. Video and audio playback is generally choppy and unusable, but sometimes flawless. Sometimes the screenbeams can't be discovered and need rebooting. Sometimes even rebooting doesn't work. Then they show up later in the day or for somebody else with the exact same model of laptop.

 

I know of other schools that have success with them, but what their secret is remains to be discovered.

Hi @mat1986 have you checked the network, firewall or WAPs to see if Multicast UDP /  5353 is allowed (this may be specific to BenQ - so you may need to check with your hardware provider), make sure that no filtering/blocking on broadcast (mDNS) on your network is on; for example, you have to disable "broadcasting filtering" on Aruba Central for Aruba AP. Finally, check the router setting and make sure device isolation (or similar setting) is turned off.

I've been in the weeds on this one   Quick fix, use intel wifi cards. Realtek absolutely kinda support it and pooh the bed when asked to miracast. (and they get really fussy if you use the touchback features)

 

I've dumped all my Realtek based RTL8852CE and RTL8822 based wifi cards as they effectively do not support miracast.  

 

As I have AMD laptops I've had to use Intel AX210 cards (Wifi6e) but if I had intel based laptops I'd get a BE based Wifi7 card.  but ANY Intel cards works great with Miracast as it is derived from Intel WiDI   

 

(I was using a 2017 intel 8265 just the other day worked a treat)

EDIT: Also ESET with firewall enabled but no rules will block Miracast! (turn it off or follow GPO firewall)

Agree with this, we have new laptops with MediaTek cards and I've had to replace them all with Intel to get any kind of Miracast reliability!

morning! just and update. We had an issue a couple of days ago. Miracast wouldn't work on said laptop, for any user on any screen i tried. i uninstalled ESET AV, it worked straight away.

 

i then reinstalled ESET AV, it temporarily worked, then after about 20 - 30 mins stopped. that then lead me down the path of is AV blocking communication in some way.

 

I then looked up ESET articles for AV and found the below... and added the rule to allow "C:\Windows\System32\WUDFHost.exe" to talk on "TCP & UDP". We did this 2 days ago and not aware of any Miracasting issues since then. We are hoping this has resolved our issue. But from our testing a couple of days ago we were able to make the issue happen and consistently make it go away with this firewall policy so we're hoping Miracasting is now stable here. So Far So Good!
