Issue with Impero Extension in Chrome browser

We have an issue with the Impero extension that is set to be pushed out to Chrome browsers yet it's not being deployed as expected. The same extension ID is working as expected with Edge browsers.

 

We are currently a mix of v141 / v142 of Chrome browser yet neither seem to want to install the working version of the Impero extension. The MV3 Impero extension for chromebooks deploys to Chrome browser.

 

We are trying to deploy out extension id: pdmhilamamchgnnipghbjakjpbenbcdj;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx

 

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Chrome stopped supporting MV2 extensions so depending on version it won't work any more, you need to use the MV3 extension which I believe is lpkffpnklfdjompeeodhpaeenfdpibmj

I've got that to deploy out but for some reason it's not working or enabling, instead it's greyed out.

Might you need to remove the old extension beforehand? (block it via GPO)

I just checked our GPO to see what we did, and realised I haven't even pushed this extension out to anything except our Chromebooks! Makes sense why every blocked page closes the whole browser window now as it's just relying on the client app. I'll push this to a few windows devices and see how it behaves and report back.

Group policy is set not to deploy pdmhilamamchgnnipghbjakjpbenbcdj;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx which is the MV2 version of Impero and lpkffpnklfdjompeeodhpaeenfdpibmj which is the MV3 version. This is also set on Google Workspace.

 

Interestingly I have noticed that we have no reports on Impero since July 2025 of Chromebooks reporting back in Impero.

We have tested MV3 on chromebooks this morning and that extension is greyed out and not communicating either.

Sorry it took so long to get back - Windows/Smoothwall was doing it's "Nooo, you're logged in as Administrator therefore you're not going to be filtered properly and Edugeek is baaaad" thing.

MV3 is working fine on our Chromebooks but I get the same as you on the Windows devices (on Chrome at least). Edge works fine! Digging further into it now though.

Got it I think! The extension you have, and likewise me is for ChromeOS only. For Windows it's jmbpophoikplmainbalhodlgkkmogkmp

Now to look at why the chromebooks are not working.

@synaesthesia I think i've missed something with the JSON config for Impero MV3 on chromebooks for the extension to talk to the impero server. If that's the case, can you give an example of what the JSON needs to be please?

 

I've already got our Impero Server saved in the bookmarks bar and can access the IIS page on the Server form the Chromebook.

I don't recall there being any specific config other than the bookmark - are you sure it's in managed bookmarks rather than the toolbar?

I did have an issue at the start of last term which Impero looked at for me, they needed to do a repair installation of our impero server - didn't take long to do and the chromebooks instantly started reconnecting. The troubleshooting he did beforehand did just involve checking the managed bookmark and the version (v8.6.34)

Okie doke - i thought there were some lines needed in allowed hosts.

 

Yup, nothing has changed regarding bookmarks since it was working back in July 2025. 

 

I cannot see anything in the firewall either that should be showing traffic from the Chromebook to the impero server.

Could be worth opening a call with them, they managed to hop onto ours within a couple of hours of logging so was quite impressed with their support (see my edit on last post)

Ta, i've got a call logged with them so will see what they say - i've noticed there is an update to the server too so have requested an update to that too.

All sorted, an upgrade to 8.6.34 sorted the chromebook issue.
