Hi all,

 

Is anybody using this on Windows 11 that might be able to offer me a bit of installation advice, please?

We're using it here. I tried capturing it and repackaging as an MSIX but it didn't really work as expected and found that it didn't make any reg changes. Now I just use cmd file using xcopy to copy the installed program files directly onto PCs and haven't had any issues from staff/students using it. Been doing that for a couple of years now on Win 10 and Win 11.

Thanks, I've got it installed now, but every time it runs, there is a request for elevated UAC, Did you also have this?

Do you have AppLocker configured? I had to add an Allow executable rule with it not being a standard installation, granted access to staff and students.

We have it on one computer. I used RunAsTool so that standard users can run it. I also use a GP (just for that computer) to prevent the UAC prompt: Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies/Security Options - User Account Control - User Account Control: Behaviour of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode - Elevate without prompting.

I have some instructions a colleague left me when he left and I’ve never had any issues. 
 

Install RDWorks whilst logged on as an administrator

 

Press Install

The installer will unpack

Press "Install" at the bottom

Wait for the install to finish

 

Create a folder called "temp" (CASE SENSITIVE) within the RD works folder(C:\RDWorksV8) If you don't do this, it will throw errors when opened and every time the working space is edited in any way. 

 

Head to the install location (C:\RDWorksV8) and give users "MODIFY" permissions.

 

Check that the software can open with a non admin account.

Yes we have Applocker and I have allowed the executable but still get prompted for an admin username and password when standard user is logged on.

 

I have set the app to run as an administrator, created the temp folder and given a standard user modify permissions on the directory but they are still prompted for an admin username and password.

Have you given the folder read & execute permissions? I don't give modify permissions on the folder.

Looking again, I wonder if I have got the wrong download or install because the UAC prompt is asking about an app from an unknown publisher making changes and I notice the exe is not digitally signed.

I don't get any UAC prompts at all when running it. I haven't had to do anything on the client PC (I deploy this to 30+ PCs) and don't have any GPO changes to UAC behaviour, just the default.

 

If you downloaded it from ruidacontroller.com then it should be the right one.

Ours doesn't seem to be digitally signed either though.

This is how the permissions are set on the folder, it just uses the local users group from the PC and isn't something I am setting myself:

 

You can configure AppLocker to give everyone execution access to the whole folder incase it's stopping execution of the other items.

 

That's just about my entire config for this.

That's just about my entire config for this.

Does this apply to Win 11 24H2 and newer? This was the case for us, when running earlier versions, but moving to 24H2 required use to use RunAsTool - see my previous post.

That could be the difference, this was set up on Win 10 and I'm still on Win 11 23H2.

So are you adding domain users to the local users group on the PC or is that PC not on the domain?

Domain users should already be a member of the local users group when you domain-join a PC I think. All of the PCs I've done this on are domain-joined, and I've no funky configuration messing with local groups.
