Interesting comparisons to be had.  Earliest item on MS is 1980, and there have been 184 things killed off.  Google's earliest is 2001 and then have 297.  Would be interesting to see some stats like the average age of killed off things or years per deaths. Have these been accelerating due to culture or staying steady?

There are huge amounts missing from the Microsoft list. For example, Xbox, Xbox 360, Midori, any old version of Windows or Office, Agent, Project Spark, Live Writer, Smartglass, Trident...

I think also Google have a reputation of getting a lot of stuff out quickly (see the current range of Vertex AI offerings), whereas MS often tend towards buying in a larger companies and rebranding

Are these not just via evolutions of the original though...? It's still Windows, it's still Office!

Not killed off...

That would be akin to saying Google killed off Chrome OS ver 1.x

ChromeOS has alway been an iterative single rolling OS which keeps itself up to date as long as your hardware is in the pre-declared Auto Update Expiry window. Windows and Office do not traditionally do this and has always been about distinct products and versions with hard End-of-Life dates that are regularly not communicated till after the replacement product is brought in.

By your logic they didn't kill off Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger cause Edge and Skype replaced them.

This is true. Most of our server run ChromeOS (techinally called COS, which is based on ChromeOS). It never expires it just keeps upgrading itself.

But by your logic we could include the 14 previous versions of android?

Also how are we defining killed? With something like xbox there's nothing stopping people from still using it.

Google Earth Pro will be killed next year. I'm now getting a message on it that it will be unavailable for download as of the 25th July 2027.
Not sure if this means that the image feeds will be cut off, or you will be able to continue to use the desktop app if you already have it.
