Looking for some feedback on CCTV sotware.

 

Our setup of IP cameras is recorded on to a number of PC's in secure locations using Vivotek cameras and sofware.

 

Everything works OK its just that most of the authorised users find the software interface very difficult to use.

 

Some things the SW should have:

- user access via web browser - playback really important here if possible though installing a client wouldn't be a probelm

- user friendly interface

- must be able to have multi zone motion detection and scheduled recording

 

Thinking of changing the recording onto one machine (with backup) so SW that allows upto 64 channels would be necessary.

We still haven't got a system installed buy I reckon that ZoneMinder (see ZoneMinder: Linux Home CCTV and Video Camera Security with Motion Detection ) will do the trick. Ideally, I would like to hear off a school using it but for minimal outlay all should be well. The important features such as motion detection and recording to disk are all there and camera support is very good.

The Vivotek SW is free but only records 16 channels. Personally I don't have a problem with the interface and recording to a number of PC's has advantages re security of data. I've also got it setup to backup data from one PC to one of the others in a differnt location.

 

On first view Zoneminder looks interesting I'll do some further reading to check.
