mark80 Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Morning I am now 6 weeks in to the post as Data & Exams Manager and starting to get all my ducks lined up, by which i mean ensureing that the grades they are selecting at assessment time are the exact grading/points score they will get when they get the qualification. This is easier said than done because you introduce the anomoly of teachers! I have a bit of a question for you, up until now i thought i had it but the provider of the course has made me doubt We have students sitting this qualification "City & Guilds Level 2 Principal Learning in Hair and Beauty Studies" with the QAN 600/6482/1, using the OFQUAL website i can see the available performance tabe Link to OFQUAL. You can see the grading is A*,A,B,C, worth 100% of L2 threshold and worth 290,260,230 and 200 respectively. It is confirmed they will count in the performance measures. With the L2 threshold being 5 GCSE grades at A*-C and the qual above being 100% of that, it stands to reason that this qualification is worth the equivilent of 5 GCSEs? Now i know that sounds a daft question but the provider are saying they have information from City 7 Guilds that its worth 1 GCSE. Can anyone shed light on that? Do i need to starting drinking early today or should i just slap the teacher?
mark80 Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Are the A*,A,B,C grades available just a Pass, Merit, Distinction by any other name? Even though it happens to be a letter that forms the GCSE structure, are they equivilents? So can i count it as 1 or 5 GCSEs in my headline figure?

CaterinaAnna Posted December 16, 2013 Author Posted December 16, 2013 My understanding is the same as Normal Distribution's: on the face of it, for any vocational qualifications size now only matters for telling you how to scale points down to 1 GCSE equivalent. However, we're still counting 'old way' as well for internal analysis and that's led to a problem of its own. Pearson BTEC Level 1/2 First Certificate Courses are listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications as requiring 240 guided learning hours, which agrees with the spec and what our Head of PE was told at a board meeting ("it's worth 2 GCSEs"), BUT the Performance Measures list a contribution of 60% to Level 1 & 2 thresholds, rather than 40%. The points scale appropriately, but since we're using' total points old system ' as one of our measures it's a frustrating discrepancy. Have had no joy chasing it down - is anyone else even bothered?

Will Ofqual’s Register of Regulated Qualifications be updated to reflect the changes to performance measures? (updated April 2013) DfE provides information on performance measures for Ofqual to publish on their Register of Regulated Qualifications. This information will be updated in due course to show the points and contributions to level thresholds that will count in the 2014 and 2015 performance tables, reflecting performance table reforms. Thats all a big kick in the **** for the schools that are following this often expensive qualifications
CaterinaAnna Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 Thanks for the digging: once they're amended to show the published values, they'll all say 20% (if they count at all), but we know that, so that's not the issue. I suspect they haven't changed it because most places don't care anymore whether it's 2 or 3 GCSEs worth - but I want them to either admit they've made a mistake or explain why it isn't one (it would feel so good to get one up on the DfE)!
