Sounds like they arent managing the devices and whatever filtering they are using is single browser based and kids are just installing another browser?

wonder if its the google images thumbnail issue or secure DNS or something, it seems they are filtered in school by the firewall but at home maybe safe search enforced or DNS blocking

Is this not misworded? E.G. We run the usual filters here, but there is still a small chance that adult content could slip through the net - no filter is 100% perfect after all. So I could say "I cannot 100% stop students from viewing adult material on site, no filter is perfect - something may always slip through" - and the press then say "Mikes school can't stop students viewing adult material on school computers" ?

 

Though RTFA seems to suggest their filter doesn't enable safesearch on certain engines - but could they not block these search engines and just allow google's safesearch ?

We should also remember that no matter what you do, children will find a way around, it is just that it is such a big rollout that it will come to the attention of people a lot quicker than say 1 student at 1 school finding out that they can do it.

It looks like that is exactly what they did:

I have observed that setup elsewhere. Only allowing one search engine is also unreasonable since there are two that can have "safesearch" enforced. I used to allow The Duck as well until they made an anonymous private chat feature available.
