EDIT 2024 - One speaker slot still open, what would you like to fill it?

We've had a great response to our request from various organisations for the conf this year, but due to some not being able to make it (we have them down for future webinars now), we have one slot left to fill. So what would you like to see?

 

Please give a topic\subject area rather than a company you would like to speak, as this will help us spread the net a little wider when reaching out.

So, suggestions?

Maybe post a list of the topics that are already covered? I can guess from the vendors, but I didn't spot a "Bob's talking about X in Y" list.

That will be coming soon once I get returns from our confirmed speakers as to the exact content of their talks (quite a bit of back and forth to ensure speakers do not duplicate subject areas goes on), but so far we have the following companies\organisations speaking and I think you can guess from those the topic areas to be delivered. Please note that the subjects in brackets are only a rough guide to what is to be covered:

"Practical cybersecurity easy wins". Things that are cheap to implement (money & time) with a big impact to security but minimal impact on the end-user experience. Ideally things that a technical audience may not have come across before (or aren't widely known/done).

 

Given some of the posts on here of late, a primer on the difference between criminal and civil liability wouldn't go amiss.

I was thinking that. I think EDu IT is going to really struggle over the next 5 years when IT people are being offered tesco checkout pay. Edu is going to heamorage good IT staff to industry if something isn't done.

We had asked Google to speak, but they can't provide anyone at this time (they have had a bit of a staff turnover and new people finding their feet I think), but I know a former Google employee and can reach out to see if they are available.

Hmm, I think that career guidence is a good topic idea, and we do know more than a few job agencies, but with educational IT being such a wide church, it does not have the same kind of requirements as, say, a corporate role, where specialities are more common.

To be told you need to specialise or get yourself trained up in 'A', 'B' and 'C' may not be relevent to the education sector. This would require a bit of thought, and, as before, may be better suited to a webinar.

Regarding getting SLT to value IT, I think that would be more suited to something directed directly to them. We know IT staff are important, the private sector know they are important, but in an organisation that does not have to generate its own capital and is habitually conditioned to pay the bare minimum to anyone who is not a teacher, it is a hard message to push.

This may well be worth a seperate coversation outside of the devaluing thread, where we can focus on the process of how this might be achieved.
