How to send control commands to a TV over ip

Hi there

We have a sharp tv pn-q701.

It's connected to the wired network. All good.

Unfortunately this TV doesn't seem to be able to schedule itself on or off within the menus.

 

Because it's connected to the network, I was wondering if I could send some commands to it over ip. The TV supports this.

 

I've no idea about how to send pc commands to the TV. Ideally I'd like a script which we can schedule to send on and off commands.

Apologies, I've not come across this before..is this through telnet, command line etc? Any pointers would be appreciated.

It's normally via RS-232 (the one that looks like an old serial port in terms of cables) that you'd connect things like projectors/screens via to remotely control them

 

"Function to feed the remote controller-received signal to Pin 9 (open) on the RS232C" is what one of the pages say so I'd assume that's the case here too

 

But it does mention using WOL as an option (hen "Quick Start Mode" is set to "Off" and "Wake on Wi-Fi/LAN" is set to "Enable", you can use "Wake on LAN (Magic Packet)" to turn on the power via LAN.)

 

Which would just be like a standard PC WOL tool for waking an IT suite if you find the Mac address of the network port

Thanks Steve. I was really looking for a way to do this across the network (ip) as opposed to serial.

Is there a tool that does the opposite of wol?

Try setting the ip, port via the screen as per p64 and connect using putty/another telnet client. You should then be able to send the same commands you would over serial. We’ve just installed a load of vestel signage screens and use putty to add/remove schedules or turn them off remotely when I realise the schedule hasn’t worked

For the screens we have its telnet, the manual for yours suggests you can choose telnet/ssh but then suggests you select none if if I remember correctly, telnet is the most basic of options so I’d try that first.

I would take a look at Bitfocus Companion: https://bitfocus.io/. It is a great bit of OOS for controlling lots of AV equipment. It's desginex around using the Elgato Streamdeck as a controller but also has timer based automation (triggers).

 

Looks like there is a Sharp TV module: https://bitfocus.io/connections/sharp-tv.

 

Hopefully will work with your model.

You can use a hardware controller to output IP addresses - we use Extron for this in all our teaching spaces and they have an IP driver for your screen available. If you want an easy to use interface to control the screen as opposed to telnet etc they're a great solution.

For simple on/off functionality, we've found the most reliable mechanism is to put a timer on the mains socket. Around £10 for a digital mains timer on Amazon - there are cheaper mechanical ones, but those seem to break rather easily. Works well with our ChromeOS kiosk devices, but do check whatever device you are using is okay with simply having the power cut to it on a daily basis. There was another thread on here a few weeks ago asking about managed versions of those timer switches. Annoyingly, Ubiquiti (who we use for switches and CCTV) do seem to do those, but only in the US at the moment.

The only way I know of on how to control a TV on your network is via a Smart Mobile Phone on the same network, you download the App from the App Store and then Pair the App with your TV (it normally scans the network for devices and a code comes up on the TV if it finds it) and then you can change the volume, channel, move the pointer if it has one or power off the TV.
