vSphere - Initialize vmdk

Good afternoon,

 

Having very little vSphere experience I was impressed when I managed to create a vmdk and attach it to a VM but it reports as not initialized when viewing via disk management on Windows.

 

There is one line on VMWare documentation: -w|--writezeros

 

Was I supposed to put this at the end of the vmkfs tools command when I created the vmdk or if not, how do I initialize this disk?

I’m assuming that you have attached the VMDK to your VM, can see the disk in Windows, and you want to “bring it online”?

 

You should be able to right click on the drive in the Windows Disk Management utility and Initialise it from there.

 

Once it’s initialised you can then right click and create new volume and follow the wizard as normal.
