Okay this one has me stumped. Trying to set default apps for PCs through the .xml in Group Policy and it's just not playing nice.

Tried through UNC share, tried copying the thing locally to PCs, just refuses to work.

This must be working out there in the world, how are we all managing this now?

Thanks any/all answers/sympathy.

We're managing to to this to set Chrome as the default browser. I know that Windows treats PDF app association as something of a special case, and generally doesn't like that being changed by anyone other than the user themself (because security), so we gave up on that one.

To specify Chrome as the default browser, we use a GPO to point Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> File Explorer -> Set a default associations configuration file to an xml file stored in a share accessible by all computers/users. We use the UNC path the to file.

Cheers for that - yep pretty much what I've been doing. Oddly enough (which I should have mentioned in the first place) it's fine with Chrome. Looking specifically to get VLC media player as weapon of choice but it doesn't want to. Swear I'm copying everything right to the xml file from the PC I'm exporting the setting from, looks right also from the bits and bobs I've dug up online, just not playing nice.
