Sims next gen and ESS

Hi all,

 

Have a school who use SIMs \ FMS installed on a VM and an onsite server.

 

Had the following email from the local authority:-

 

 

The school have been having a few issues with SIMS Next Gen so we need to get ESS involved and monitoring the server for a few days. To do this though, we’ll need a couple of things updating on the Server.

 

Would it be possible for you to assign 4 virtual processors to the SIMS VM (it currently has 1 assigned) and also patch SQL 2016 to the latest version?

 

Once this is done we will be able to log the call with ESS. I’ve tried to do this before without these things done and they won’t help until they are!

 

I've not heard of SIMS Next Gen or ESS, does anyone know what this is about, I assume it's next generation of SIMs by the sounds of it being supported by someone called ESS !!!

 

Also, how do you assign 4 virtual processors to the SIMS VM ? Will this have impact on the main DC itself ?

Regarding the VM, You need to know what it is hosted on in order to change the amount of processors and can then change it there.

And how the hell is SIMS running (other than extremely badly) on a single assigned CPU?? Especially with SQL on the same server. Would literally be running better on a 2010 admin computer! Whoever set that up needs their head wobbling.

In Hyper-V you can right click on the VM and go to settings > Processors and you can change the number of v-cores from there, but the VM will have to be turned off while you do this. (If you're not using Hyper-V then it will probably be similar).

If the "main DC" is your virtual host, then assigning more processing power to the VM could have an impact on the host, as the VM can use more of the available processing power (meaning it can't be used by other local processes).

 

I think by the end, our SIMS server had 8 cores and something like 20gig of ram (but we had 100 or so staff using it all at once).
