Am updating an image at the moment, everyting else has updated fine, flash, acrobat reader, java etc but when i run Microsoft Update it finds the updates, then fails to download them and the only error it gives me is that "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed,, to fix this problem run the updates again or use the trouble shooter"

i have run the updates several times now and the trouble shooter isnt giving me anything useful, does anyone have any ideas???

all help appreciated.

If it helps this is what happens on my network as I have a WSUS server and group policy settings to point at my WSUS. Not sure if the WSUS settings would interfere with downloading and installing directly from Microsoft.

Take a look at the windowsupdate.log file in c:\windows - it's pretty verbose but it might have something which says "Error xxxxx" which could get you started.

Also, try stopping the updates service (net stop wuauserv) and BITS (net stop bits - may not be started) then deleting the whole folder c:\windows\softwaredistribution and the windowsupdate.log file. Restart the updates service and run wuauclt /detectnow to force a new download cycle.

Cheers srochford, i looked at the log, searched the error code and apparently one of my required dlls wasnt registered properly, so i re registered them and its now working.

Thanks yet again Steve. One of my laptops was not being offered SP3, even though it needed it. Followed your instructions and hey presto it's now downloading. If only all the "little difficlties" were as easily solved.
