Is it possible to redirect a share?

Well today hasnt been a good the server I was hoping would limp on until the Easter holidays finally gave up the ghost and one of our 3 Com switches died as well

 

Anyway to avoid confusion and to make the manual clean up of DNS easier I gave the server I reinstalled a completely different name. Unfortunately all the software is deployed from that server and while it wouldnt take me long to redo the GPOs . The resultant mass of software that would redeploy to all the workstations would. Is there any way to redirect a share from \\server1\app$ to \\server2\app$ ? I have put a static mapping in wins and have a cname entry in DNS but no joy. I know I should have had DFS implemented but at the time this was setup there was only two servers and the second server didnt have the capacity blah blah *beats myself with the stupid stick* .

 

Any ideas ?

I know how you feel Chris, I've just had the same hassle of rebuilding a server that i hoped would last till easter.. only just starting to get everyone back on - but internet is down (think we unplugged a few too many cables!!)

 

As for your GPO Distribution share - what about creating a member server as \\server1\apps$ then copying the apps over onto that?

 

If you've scrubbed DNS then it should re-register ok on a new IP?

Yes I suppose it could register ok but I just wanted to make sure so Im not keen to put the name back on incase I have to troubleshoot again. I think I will redeploy a few apps that regularly call on their source and see how I go from there and do the rest at easter.

would it not be easier to not deploy any software until Easter when I assume you'll be re-imaging them all to point to the new server?

Thanks I may look at that KB article tommorow.

@Gatt its only the apps that need redeploying and at easter ive got to rehouse the contents of 2 comms cabinets so I will try for the easy fix

Well it didnt work when I tried it and I did leave plenty of time for DNS replication and flushed the local cache etc but that stuff I did with that KB article seems to be working now 8O
