This patch (SQLServer2005-KB948109-x86-ENU.exe) arrived on the WSUS and a server running SQL2005 Express installed by Backup Exec will not install it. I've also downloaded the patch manually but it still fails.

Anyone else had this issue?

The easiest way to do this is:

Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration > Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections

Still can't get it to work i have 2 similar servers running backup exec with SQL Express and the other installed without issue. I've watched it with process explorer and can't see where it is failing.

Also having problems here and it seems to trash the install as well - can't now start the sql server service! Fortunately, this SQL instance is just for "play" so it doesn't matter but it's not good :-(

I think i'm getting to the bottom of this now. This server was a DC when backup exec and SQL were installed, if i look in the patch install log i see "Failure adding user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM to local group DOMAIN\SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SERVER$BKUPEXEC (1388)" this is a domain local group that doesn't exist on this server now that it is a member server.

I'm going to remove Backup Exec and SQL Express and reinstall.
