Server licensing question

Hi, just after a little help re: licensing please.

Looking to replace a server soon - currently have a physical host running Server 2016 and 4 VM’s with Server 2016 - and going to Server 2022 for all.

Just getting quotes for hardware, and different suppliers are saying different things re: Core licensing and server licensing.

For example, if the school were to purchase Dell PowerEdge T360 with Intel Xeon E-2346 that has 6 cores - what licensing do I actually need? The school have a VLSC agreement, so do I need windows server CALS or should these be included with the VLSC?

This was all done by a 3rd party in the past, but not sure if they ever got the licensing right.

Licensing is such a nightmare, so complicated! I`ll ask our Microsoft team for you but they could need to speak to you for more info, would that be ok? We have one of the most highly qualified MS specialists in the UK for Education so would be time well spent.

Ok this is a direct copy and paste from our Software Team:

 

"They would need to buy 16 core as the base x 2

 

16 cores is the minimum pack for a server regardless if you have less cores which allows for two virtuals - you then need another pack to give the 2 extra virtuals

 

Windows server cals are needed but would be covered on your school agreement if you have any of the following school wide

 

Core cal

Pro Desktop

EMS security suite

 

Or if you have the below school wide

Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 (not office 365 as the M365 has the EMS included which includes a cal)"
