ram help for a mac novice

mate has a faulty 512mb module hes asked me to look into getting replaced for him..

 

Question is, can I get any PC 2700 DDR SODIMM 333MHz to replace the faulty chip or is there some Mac specific crap he needs to get?

I have used standard non Mac branded RAM in a several iMacs just fine. Just need to make sure that it meets all of the timing specs as some of the Apple hardware gets unhappy if it does not have all the right timing values.

The best way is to use Crucials site either put in the Model number

or download the Mac System Scanner DMG.

Beware, though, that the Crucial scanner isn't foolproof.

 

I recently specced some upgrade modules for a set of specific model Toshiba laptops using their Memory Selector thingy, ordered up seven sets, then found that they didn't actually work with the existing RAM in the laptop - that was a timing issue.

 

Better to try and get the exact specs of the existing module and replace like for like.

I've found it 100% accurate when scanning an Apple Mac System, plus the downloadable .DMG is Macintosh only. At least Apple have full control over their Hardware.
