hello, we are a MS school but having to dabble in Google...

I have created 2 Azure groups, set up the the Google Azure Enterprise app so the 2 groups sync to google admin.

One of the groups I want to contain staff who will teach/create classes using google classroom (this group I have added to the built-in Google 'Classroom Teachers' group)

the other group is more just to allow members to sign into YouTube etc, don't want them creating classes.

How can I set classroom creation and other permissions in Google admin?

Google Admin > Apps > Google Workspace > Classroom > General settings > Teacher permissions. Set it to "Verified teachers only". That will set it such that only members of the "Classroom Teachers" group can create classes.

Thanks, is it better practice to add all 3 of my azure (non class teacher) staff groups to a single azure group, sync that to google, then set restrictions on that.

Or

Sync my 3 staff groups to google and add those to a google group, which i then set restrictions on.

Maybe it doesn’t matter. Maybe google doesn’t support nested groups. Mmm groups.

The Classroom Teachers group will accept other Google groups as members, and work accordingly, so you'd just need to sync your existing staff groups to Google and then add those into Classroom Teachers.

Word of warning. Google groups by default will have web posting enabled (so that they work like a web forum), but you'll want to turn web posting off for each of your groups, leaving them to work just like regular mail groups. Otherwise members can see posts from before they were a member, which is a bit of a data protection fail.

Thanks, are we talking setting permissions on the synced Azure groups or the Google groups they will belong to? Maybe both?

On the Google groups. In the settings for each Google group is an option to allow web posting (on by default but you'll most likely wat it turned off), along with a bunch of others that you'll want to familiarise yourself in terms of whether non-members can email the group, etc.
