Teams - New vs Classic

OK, well behind the curve here (as always) and need someone to explain what all the fuss is about...

 

We don't use Teams here as a general rule, I've only ever installed it for about 2 people and used the Teams machine installer (Teams_Windows_x64.msi).

 

I've never included it in our Office deployments (currently LTSC 2021), we don't use any of those new fangled O365 web apps, just proper hardcore on the machine software.

 

But... I've just had one of our student teachers that I installed it for (who does all her Uni work and Tutor meetings on Teams) say a message popped up saying something like 'Teams is going to stop working soon, switch to the new version'...

 

They are nervous as all their work is going to disappear and to be honest, so am I. Especially when I read things like...

 

"As the legacy and new version of Teams (free) are separate from each other, you'll need to manually recreate one-to-one and group chats from Microsoft Teams Free (classic)."

 

and

 

"In the new Microsoft Teams (free) app, you'll no longer see teams and channels. Instead, these have been replaced with a simplified communities experience that allows people to collaborate in threaded conversations"

 

and

 

The new Microsoft Teams (free) app lets you chat, schedule meetings, and so much more. Some features require a Microsoft subscription to unlock even more capabilities and remove limits.

 

and

 

"Files - If you used teams and channels in the legacy Teams (free) app to store files, you'll be able to use communities in the new Teams (free) app in much the same way. To get started, create a new community and then upload your files to the community. Files uploaded to a community will be stored in OneDrive.

 

To add to the confusion we don't use OneDrive and don't have it installed...

 

We do have a Microsoft Tenant and there is a possibility for me to add this user to it (they all have free A1 plus licenses but I hear they will also expire soon), but this is obviously not the account they are currently using, so it will be even more confusing.

 

I have no experience with any of it to help guide them through it and to be honest I have no idea what I'm supposed to do.

A bit more research seems to make it sound even worse...

There’s no automated process to move any content or data from Microsoft Teams Free (classic) to Microsoft Teams (free). You will need to manually create chats and meetings, and communities to replace teams."

 

How do I preserve my files?

 

You have until April 12, 2023 to view and export your files. After that date, you’ll lose access to Microsoft Teams Free (classic) and your data will be deleted.

 

However, we're March 16, 2024 and still using it... Version is 1.7.00.8753 which I can't find any reference to!

I'm guessing the users haven't clicked the option to Switch to the new version, which just launches the new app and still has access to all the same Teams/Chats etc that was in the old version.

 

We deployed out Teams v2 to all our stations at the start of Jan (still having fun getting classic Teams to disappear but thats another matter).

 

If users are scared they might loose stuff, they can always view the new v2 Teams via the browser (https://teams.microsoft.com/v2/) while still using the old app.

I find you can uninstall the old teams from control panel but the new teams needs to be uninstalled from the windows start menu
