Hi,

I am currently carrying out an IT Infrastructure Stocktake / Survey to map out and identify all of our Network related IT hardware. Part of this is to ensure we are compliant with the Gov Digital Standards for education.

This document states that Primary Schools should have a download speed of 100Mbps and upload of 30Mbps.

We have used SWGFL as our ISP for many years and after managing to identify a line problem a few years ago we now get speeds of around 60-70Mbps.

Last time I was asked to consider the contract it was around £2300. I have just asked our school bus mgr for an up to date contract and he has passed me an invoice which he is about to pay, it states on the invoice FTTC Eo 80Mbps and is going to cost us around £4000 PA.

I spoke to an Openreach Engineer, who happened to be in the area and he mention that a pub across the road is using AirBand and have a 1Gb connection through a fibre line which is attached to the telegraph pole in our playground!!

Questions:

1. What should we be paying for FTTC Eo?

2. What other providers may offer better for less?

3. Do AirBand provide schools Internet and Filtering?

£4k is too much for a compliant FttC/EoFttC/FttP service. Happy to provide a comparison if you'd like, cheers

For 4k I'd be expecting 500+ not less than 100.

 

Time to shop around methinks.

At what point does it become worth getting a business FTTC connection over a leased line?

1GB/s business (contended, but not as much as residential) is more like £700 per year depending upon your area.

Does 1GB/s business FTTC compare favourably against a 100/300/500mb/s leased line?
