Video editing and all Adobe Packages

Hi All,

What hardware are people using when working with Video editing and all Adobe Packages? We need to upgrade our Marketing PCs but no matter what we throw at the hardware it's not good enough. Has anyone got a decent PC spec that works with video rendering without taking a millennium to do?!

If you're chucking good hardware and specs and still getting long render times then it might be worth looking at the editing work flow. Some video codecs aren't optimized for editing and it can be advantageous to convert clips ahead of importing.

It's a bit of a deep hole to go down but generally:

 

1. You'll get much faster editing on a multicore AMD CPU - e.g. a 32 thread Amd 5950x totally annihilates intel I5/I7 and most i9 at multithreaded stuff.

 

2. if the program you are using supports a specific GPU type to accelerate rendering then get one of those GPUs - you can't really go wrong with Nvidia but there is some stuff that runs better on AMD.

 

Do some googling on the specific software there's usually a fair few performance videos on youtube.

 

If your on a tight budget then just stick to a budget powerful CPU either single CPU AMD or Multi CPU older Xeon workstations.

What hardware are people using when working with Video editing and all Adobe Packages?

 

Our marketing person is using a recent-model 13" M1 Macbook Air, with an additional external 4K monitor. She seems to be getting on fine with that, although I don't think she's editing anything very long. "Video editing" in a school can mean cutting together 3 camera angles on a 2-hour school production, which can take a lot of storage / processing, but I would think most marketing content would be a fair bit shorter than that these days.

 

In a related question: is anyone using the web-based Adobe Photoshop on ChromeOS devices yet? Does anyone know if it works on standard Chromebooks / ChromeOS Flex devices, or only on the snazzy "Chromebook Plus" devices they've been promoting recently? Our Art department is looking at maybe having some of the students using Photoshop, we could possibly get the Art department a couple of iMacs (at £1,600 each) with per-device Adobe CC licenses (£333 per device per year), or we could get per-user licenses (£300 per user per year?) and have the pupils able to use Photoshop on their Chromebooks / at home. Video editing we can do with DaVinchi Resolve on the ICT suite Macs or with WeVideo / Canva for ChromeOS / home use.

It is recommended to use powerful processors such as Intel Core i9 or AMD Ryzen 9, at least 32 GB of RAM, fast SSDs for the operating system and project storage, as well as discrete graphics cards such as NVIDIA GeForce RTX or AMD Radeon RX. It's also important to have a well-cooled case to ensure reliable performance during long rendering sessions.
