Hello all,

I took over for the previous Tech Director in a very small school system. I don't have extensive knowledge about the backend stuff. Anyway, our old Smoothwall appliance failed and we replaced it. After many headaches and hours of trying, I cannot get it to work properly. I've had their support tech spend hours trying as well. The certificates been installed on the DHCP server as well. Now, here comes the headscratching part. It will only filter devices on a wired connection. The wifi has ZERO filtering(either secure network or guest network). They all share the same network(there are no VLANS being used). I have another call with support coming up, but I wanted to ask the minds of those that deal with this stuff all the time.

Internet>Ubiquiti Dream machine(firewall/DHCP/Gateway)>Smoothwall>Core Switch.

Any ideas are welcome as I've had to other actual IT techs look at it.

If the best minds at Smoothwall can't come up with anything, I'm not sure how much help I'm going to be. But...

How are the wireless device authenticating with the Smoothwall? Are they domain joined BYOD?

Have you got any filtering locations set (eg for the wireless IP range)?

Best guess is that the way the wireless devices authenticate with the Smoothwall guardian involves some weird quirk of your network that no-one remembers.

If the Ubiquiti Dream machine is also the wifi access point and the point of wifi traffic exit, then wifi traffic won't pass through Smoothwall and be unfiltered. You can try giving the Smoothwall IP as gateway for Wifi DHCP clients.
