keithb Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 I recently implemented Mosyle based on a suggestion from Apple. I setup Mosyle and the Apple Business Manager. I have the devices and users setup in ABM and in Mosyle. When trying to push an app to an iPad I get this on the iPad: “This Apple ID can’t be used to make purchases.” Apple told me that an Apple ID isn't required to install apps on the devices since it's using a provisioned profile using apps distributed from ABM? Any ideas why this would be so? I created an Apple ID for each devices, is this common practice? Or do they share the same Apple ID? I'm in foreign territory messing with this ABM & Mosyle MDM. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Steve21 Posted February 27, 2024 Posted February 27, 2024 Unless it's changed recently managed IDs can't be used to buy apps etc which is why I assume you're getting that error. But you should be deploying the app with the VPP licenses via Mosyle so you wouldn't require it to use their own IDs (You wouldn't even need an ID logged in if it's VPP/ABM style licenses). Are you sure you've selected that option when deploying the app to assign it that way? (Device based rather than Apple ID based etc) Steve
Michael Posted February 28, 2024 Posted February 28, 2024 There's two parts to this - within Mosyle MDM - Applications > Apple Apps and Books (VPP) Once an account is created/populated here, navigating to Install App > Profile Name, change the Assignment Method drop down to Device based - Assign licenses to device serial number
keithb Posted February 28, 2024 Author Posted February 28, 2024 Thanks for the replies, I will look into that now.
keithb Posted February 28, 2024 Author Posted February 28, 2024 Thank you both for your replies, that worked and was very fast. Now to setup everything I need and then repeat this step once I get all the other iPads up and running. Thanks again for your help!
supportman Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 Just a thread bump from a google search, is there no need to create apple ID's at all for teachers? Currently I've rolled out a base image with lots of apps, just wondering what best practice is when deploying to teachers on a 1:1 basis.
keithb Posted September 6, 2024 Author Posted September 6, 2024 From what I understand, no you don't have to create apple ID's for the users unless you allow them to install apps separately then they can use their apple ID to do so. All apps are setup in the Apple Business Manager, you "purchase" them there with as many licenses as you need, then in Mosyle you have the option of adding those apps to certain groups, etc. 1
