WEEE collections & engraved devices

Hi all,

 

What would you expect to happen to engraved devices once they have left your school? Would you find it acceptable for them to be refurbished and sold on with the engraving still in tact if the disposal company couldn’t remove it?

 

Context: A few devices disposed of in September were recently found by the police in a shop during a raid, they contacted us as they had the schools name on them.

I would expect any identifiable marks to be removed from any devices going for disposal via WEEE, similar to the expectation that data on those devices would not survive the process.

Now that's a darn good question as I am not engraving every device in the school (slowly).

 

I wouldn't expect a device to be sold on with the engraving still intact. Would be worth looking at your recycling company to find out if they are following correct procedures.

 

You may have to change your agreement with the WEE provider to state that devices should be disposed of not resold?

Our old WEEE provider had it written into their Ts&Cs that if the device or a part of it was offered for resale all identifying marks would be removed or permanently obscured. One of the reasons we used them.

I pitched laser engraving as a way of permanent marking to the Business Manager so we bought a cheap amazon Jobbie as a trial for like 150 bucks.

 

Fast forward 6 months and it's worked and proved the concept, but the machine is super slow and can not mark aluminium/titanium / ipads etc and is hard to mark different weird and wonderful shaped objects.

 

So I then pitched an upgrade to a Laserpecker 4 so we can mark on almost anything in existence and it's semi portable so you can put it onto a PC or chromebook - this is working a treat, ipads, chromebooks, pcs, plastic/leather covers, would be able to do wood furniture etc too. 10x the price, but worth it in the long run as it's about 10x faster too so it improves my departments efficiency as a bonus.

Yeah we used a laser cutter/engraver to engrave a bunch of our Chromebooks, but we should have been careful as we etched the asset number/room allocated to on the units too! Which was no good when they wanted the chromebooks reallocated and they are now stuck with meaningless etched asset codes on them! We found coloured paint/pens worked better for asset ID's, the laser etching should be just for the school name, but laser etching takes a while so we usually just use the normal securemark goop.

It goes look good though having the school logo and name etched on to them, but this would be very difficult to remove for resale - if it's even possible as the chassis would need to be sanded down!
