Hi All,

I know this is a question that has been asked many a time but I am just wanting to gather peoples experiences on monitoring ipads.

Currently looking at the following options:

Smoothwall Monitor - Requires deployment of Smoothwall Browser app however I have heard that when using this it breaks certain resources that are used in primarys such as TTRockStars nd then the only option is to revert back to safari.

Senso - Have had demo but haven't seen ipad app

Lightspeed - In the process of arranging a demo

Securus - Requires no third party web browser as explicit proxy is deployed onsite

And then in terms of where ipads are shared - have the ipads been setup in shared mode and then alerts can be traced back to the manage apple id been used.

Do you achieve this through authentication on the browser before the user is able to access the internet.

Or is it simply a case where ipads are checked out against a student at the start of a lesson and they can then be traced from hostname

Any input and views on the above would be much appreciated.

Thanks

We use Lightspeed for iPad filtering (JAMF Pro as MDM). It seamless to the user, they don't login, you push an MDM Web Filter setting, you deploy the Lightspeed client App, and use the MDM to assign the Username to the device. So long as it all marries up the user does nothing. But this is in a 1:1 deployment situation. Lightspeed will also scan Office 365 content too, so their OneDrive and emails for safeguarding content. If these are shared iPads then I have no idea how it would work.

Safeguarding/Filtering for iPads can not identify a user from their Managed Apple ID so will not work with Apple's Shared iPad, it is done via the device name.

Lightspeed MDM and filtering or my personall fav's are Jamf School and Securly, can help deploy both if you ever need any help not a fan off smoothwall a lot off my customers use/used it and always seem to face issues at some point of another

I have tested a few options in a primary school setting, all using shared iPads.

  • Smoothwall: Slow to set up and generate reports – didn't find it favorable.
  • Senso: Shows promise, appreciated the interface, but lacked alerts on the dashboard and was challenging to configure.
  • Lightspeed: Not yet explored as couldnt deploy the app

We use smoothwall with the iPads connected to the wifi with radius auth so we know who each iPad belongs to - most are now 1:1, this means we can use the default browser.

Where they aren't 1:1 we create accounts for the devices, staff have to then keep a record of who is using the devices and when (this isn't very popular!)

Bit late to this one, but just about to get rolling with the Smoothie browser on ipads! Does it really break TT Rock Stars? I think about our entire curriculum rests on that!

Also how is the Smoothie Monitor on ipads these days?

If anyone has a mo I'd be interested to hear how life is with either/both!
