"The memory could not be written"

Hi everyone,

 

New PC build, and lately upon Shutdown I'm getting an explorer.exe error that interupts the shutdown process giving a "The memory could not be written" error message.

 

It only seems to happen after a long while of playing certain games.

 

It has also started happening at random times.

 

 

I'm guessing some process is not shutting down or possibly hogging memory. Anyone got any ideas?

Run memtest and make sure it's not bad:

edit: reseating the memory might help, but my money is on bad ram.

Forgot to say I've run that, it came back no problems. Also did a scan and fix disk. No issues.

Did you try reseating it? it might help.

Perhaps try increasing the voltage on the RAM (ever so slightly!) may improve stability.

Difficult one if memtest looks good.

also: try on another operating system - if you don't get memory issues on Linux (and you ran memtest on linux) then 99/100 it's a mobo driver issue.

looking on Google says its Windows 11 KB5034204 which causes this if your PC is Bluetooth capable, seems to be controllers wired or wireless and happens even if Bluetooth is turned off.

Ah! Good to know, thanks - I think I saw the same error message on one of our new machines with a new Windows 11 build as it was shutting down, I was thinking I might have to investigate further.
