CCTV on the network

We are currently having CCTV installed and the cabling guys are drilling away merrily. Whilst I was chatting to them one asked if I would be doing the network interface. First anyone has mentioned that the CCTV is going on the network. It's not blindingly fast as it is, so what overheads can I expect if it will be handling this as well?

We notice quite a large demand when someone streams it and records but its not that bad as the majority of people 'doing that' are SLT who's switch is where the CCTV joins the network.

Pretty standard these days for the digital recorders to go onto the network, that way the footage can be viewed from anywhere normally through a web interface which saves having a dedicated 'room' for it, as you can shut the boxes in a cupboard and more-or-less forget about them.

 

We don't really notice any problems here with our networked CCTV, it's only when someone actually uses it that you will get increased traffic, but it's no worse than if someone was streaming a video from their home area or simelar.

You could put the cameras on there own VLAN if you have managed switches.

We see about 3meg from each camera - which is quite heavy when theres a lot of them

Cant say Ive noticed any slowdown or dramatic increase in traffic

However we only have the box connected to the network, the cameras use their own cabling directly to the box
