Benjamin Zephaniah: Writer, poet and Peaky Blinders actor dies aged 65

Writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah has died aged 65, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour eight weeks ago.

 

A statement posted on his Instagram account confirmed he died in the early hours of Thursday.

 

The statement said Zephaniah's wife "was with him throughout and was by his side when he passed".

 

"We shared him with the world and we know many will be shocked and saddened by this news," it added.

 

I was lucky enough to meet him when younger and his passion for language was so inspiring.

Saw this and indeed such sad news. A proper all round human being and he made the time to speak to everyone!

So sad. I literally just finished reading his book ‘Windrush Child’ with my Y6 class yesterday - just a few hours after he died. Some very sad kids today, when I told them.
