Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007

Hi,

 

I have a new server which i am going to install Exchange 2007 on. I have an existing server with Exchange Server 2003 which is on a different domain.

 

Can i migrate the mailboxes from the 2003 to the 2007?

Is there a domain trust between the two domains, you may be able to use the migration wizard to export .pst files from the old server and then back into the new one if the usernames are the same.

Do you advise to install Exchange 2007 on the new server.

Do you need a domain trust if you are going to export as PST? I thought you could just export (using exmerge will make it easy) and then import to the new domain

 

You'll lose single instance storage for existing messages if you do this - might not matter but could make your mail store grow.

If you don't want the trust there anyway I would suggest attempting using the migration wizard method first as it would possibly be easier but it will loose all mail rules.

You could go to 2007 on a VM in the first domain then do this to transfer it:

If i use Exmerge will that copy all mail, calendar, tasks everything across.

 

Can i not use a wizard?Or due to the new server being on a domain it is not possible.

Exmerge is the same thing as the migration wizard, it will copy everything in the users exchange accounts over apart from any mailbox rules that they have set up.

It may loose the signature blocks when transferred using this method.

 

First you run the export on the old server which will make a pst file for each user and store that in a location that you specify.

 

Next you copy those files to somewhere that the new server can access them and run the wizard on the new server in import mode and point it as the PST files that the original server created.

 

The two servers do not even have to be able to talk to each other in this case as it just uses the files.

 

This will not transfer AD user accounts though so each of the users being transfered will need a new account with the same name on the new domain for the mailbox to be attached to.

Ok i will go ahead and install Exchange 2007 now on the new server.

its not pretty but i would only use exmerge for moving data across.

i have installed (reinstalled) various exchange 2003 servers using exmerge.

 

i also use it for backing up exchange mailboxes.

 

One thing you need to know before you exmerge and this is very very important.

 

The old server probably has mailbox limits as its been in a while some people may have the limits tweaked from the defaults so someone may have a 1gb mailbox IF you use exmerge and import the mailbox to the new server the new servers limits on mailbox sizes need to be set higher than the sizes of the mailboxes otherwise it will just import the limit set in exchange and not do the rest. it may sound obvious but it had me confused for a while.

A question I had was what do other schools do when they migrate emails from one system to another. In our case it will be single instance of exchange 2003 to exchange 2007 for our staff mailboxes.

 

I be interested to hear what stategy do schools use to move onto a new system.

 

Do schools do any of the following:

 

• Move all mailboxes from one email server to another, so all users have all the emails like they did in the old system.
  
• A Clean slate. New email server has no old emails. Archive all emails to an PST file which staff can access if they need to see an email from the previous system.
  
• What I would prefer is whilst migrating only to be able to move 6-12 months worth of emails and archive the rest. Does Microsoft or third party offer any tools?
  

 

Any help on this would be most appreciated.
