How much power does a HP Proliant DL580 server use about....

There are much more energy efficient servers out there, what on earth do you need it for? I would guess at least a constant 200 - 400W which over a year is going to cost plenty, and will heat whatever room its in quiet nicely.

 

If its just as a home server, get the very lowest clocked core duo cpu and build your self a server around that. Add some of those new WD energy efficient 500 gig HD's for £60 and you will probably come in under 100W!

It won't use anywhere near 800w even if you're running folding/SETI/whatever, my conservative estimate using my own power monitor for running my P4/3.06ghz/550W at home a while back was about 15-20p/day.

You've not mentioned how many hard disks, and of what type. These are a major power drain...

This site does the calculations on power to money for you - Electricity Running Cost Calculator from UK Power. Based on it using about the same energy as a 400W lightbulb, and running for 720 hours per month, then it will cost £28.80 a month - if you pay the same for electricity as they do! A server like this, http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=803368, will cut cost dramatically, given it's power consumption of just 29W, it will cost a little over £2 a month... I know that my headless Dell SC440 with 2Gb ram and 2x500Gb drives in raid would draw 78w. Adding a 3rd (non-raid) 80Gb drive for the OS increased the power consumption to around 85w.

 

These figures are for idle/low load. When booting or under heavy load the server would draw around 100w.

 

I measured these values using the exact energy meter mentioned in this thread. What is frightening is when you work out what it costs to run at load 24/7 with energy prices at current levels. Those energy meters are quite addictive - you find yourself plugging all sorts of appliances in to see how much they cost to run (standby mode.....)

oh yes...I bought one months ago and did everything in the house. Quite an eye opener.

 

£5 power usage per week or less..love it. Testing CFL lamps are always a fun moment..I've seen some cheap 11w ones that use less than 11w, and some branded Phillips 11w ones that use up to 20-22watts.

 

Obsessive, me? No.. Not bad for about £25 delivered to my door.
