NAS Options / advice

We are looking at purchasing a NAS for each of our 4 schools. These will be used to share large video files recorded in our dedicated TV studios. The files will be uploaded to the NAS, opened and edited on classroom PCs.

All PCs on this network have 10GB capabilities so a NAS with the same would be beneficial.

 

Ideally, it would be good if at night all the NAS boxes across the 4 schools sync with each other moving the edited files to be available locally for each school.

 

I also like the idea of using the storage on the NAS for Microsoft 365 backups, which is something the Synology units offer.

 

Have anyone got examples of Synology boxes that are doing something similar to the above.

 

The units need to be rack mount, and preferably have dual PSU and 10GB copper or fibre.

Always been happy with the Synology Appliances & less happy with the QNAPs but that's just personal opinion.

 

I do think the QNAPs tended to have slightly better hardware to the comparable Synology, but the Synology software appeared to be better to me.

The synology rackstations are good , from memory the higher end ones come with dual psu etc.

 

You could also get a standard rackmount server and load truenas or windows on it

We are serverless so want to avoid any Windows server. Looking at the RS1619xs+ and adding a 10GB card to it.

 

The 16 series seems to be the most basic that supports the M365 backups.

A philosophical question, a NAS is basically a Linux server in a black box so are you still serverless?

Yes……because I haven’t bought the NAS yet [emoji23]
