Sonic007 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 (edited) Hi everyone, A teacher's laptop won't boot and it has important data I need to get off it. The Hard drive is an M2 SSD. So far I've got a Windows to go USB that lets me boot Windows and then I see the SSD drive listed in My Computer. I can access certain user accounts in c:\users as it lets me take ownership but one of them is not accessible....And that is the one with all the data. Does anyone have any ideas how I can access it? I need to be able to backup the data to a hardive I've hooked up before I reformat and set it up again. Thankyou. Edited September 8, 2023 by Sonic007
TechMonkey Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Can you extract the drive from the laptop? If so, get it in a caddy and profit. Always easier to get it in a caddy and work on.

Thankyou. That is my next thing to try. Just picked up a SSD to USB caddy. The laptop's an annoying one to take to pieces! You think it will be easier to access that way?
Rob_D Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Have you tried using SetACL Studio? I found it pretty good at brute forcing permission resets on things like broken home drives or user profiles.

That's my "go to" in these scenarios. Good luck btw. Thankyou. I was able to use a Windows2Go version of Windows 10 to boot from USB. Would Ubuntu let me see the drive and bypass the permissions?
