bknaggs Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 I've a need to reinstall my Smoothwall S8 (dual 2.5" disks accessible from the front) so thought I'd run through the process on my old S8 (blue, dual 3.5" disks only accessible by taking the case off). Using Rufus to create a bootable USB I can successfully install Leeds 44 from SmoothGuard1000-UTM-amd64-SP19.iso but if I try and use the same USB with Leeds 65 - SmoothGuard1000-UTM-amd64-SP25.iso I get a message saying it is unable to create the UEFI boot filesystem. Is this a compatibility problem between the latest ISO and the older S8? I've installed it successfully on an old PC I had in the office so I'm happy the USB is working and it looks like the download is OK.
mrwoberts Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 As a test, in Rufus, try using the DD method when applying the iso.
bknaggs Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 Cheers for the suggestion. I'll give it a go and report back.
bknaggs Posted May 17, 2023 Author Posted May 17, 2023 Same result. The S8 boots fine but fails at the partitioning stage. Smoothwall support are back looking at the initial problem with my newer S8 not taking updates.
mrwoberts Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 Okay, sounds like a better solution is on the way. In the meantime, some possible troubleshooting ideas (aka rabbit holes) - try to separately wipe the existing disk then try the installation again - any screenshots/photos of the step just before it fails, then when it fails - try a different disk inside the S8 - does it give you an error code?? any access to the logs at this stage?
rmusergroup Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 I remember in a previous job I had issues installing Smoothwall on an appliance. If memory serves me correct, it was because you couldn't use the standard ISO image available from the customer download website, it had to be a Caswell Appliance image that came in the format of .IMG instead of .ISO, I remember having the same issue failing at the partitioning stage. Also, the Caswell image is the only one that includes the LCD driver otherwise you won't get the LCD working on your S8. Reach out to Smoothwall and ask them for the latest S8 Caswell installable image. Hope this helps. RM User Group James

There is no need for a separate image for USB installs.
timbo343 Posted January 5, 2024 Posted January 5, 2024 (edited) Did anyne get to the bottom of this? Ive got an S8 Caswell appliance which i'm struggling to get working with with same message. Ive got ISOs which are for the Exacta Appliance but i dont think they work on this blue box i have. Update - I've taken out the 2x 1Tb 2,5" seagate HDDs and put in a seagate 250Gb drive and the installation has gone on to this box without any issues. I've tested both Caswell and Exacta, both install with no problems. PS. This is only a test box to prove a point that the live box has an issue. Edited January 5, 2024 by timbo343
Aprice Posted January 5, 2024 Posted January 5, 2024 Had the same problem a while back with an S4, didn't seem to want to do a mirror. Worked fine just on one disk. After each failed attempt I did have to re-format the drives. 1
