FN-GM Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I am looking at possibly using Mikrotik managed switches at home. I am wondering if anyone has any experience or feedback please? Anything to watch out for? Thank you.
XiJ Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I use a Mikrotik router at home and have used small switches on schools (often PoE powered). I can’t think of any major gotchas. They’ve all worked as expected. They were acting as fairly dumb switches for me. The router does have vlans set tho. As ever, make sure OS is up to date disable default admin creds.
Davit2005 Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) No useful CLI on the switches at least not on the 3 CRS switches I have at home. They can do vlan and LACP etc. Can't see how to set a default vlan for management for instance, I have a specific vlan for management and jus have a VM that has a adapter with IP on that vlan (also handy as I can access the different vlan whilst I am on work VPN :-) ). But for 10Gb networking it is hard to beat them if you want to use vlans. I have the CRS305 (4 SFP+), CRS309 (8 SFP+) and CRS317 (16 port SFP+) . Also run a few Routerboards as well for layer 3 stuff. Seem rock solid enough. Edited February 9, 2023 by Davit2005
Aprice Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 We love the Mikrotik routers, the switches are a little odd to use for the first time. I would avoid most of them if you require L3 routing as they are a little weak when it comes to that performance wise, but as L2 switches there OK especially if you need really high speed ports on a tight budget. 1
