The iPhone was announced 16 years ago

It's 16 years since Steve Jobs announced the very 1st iPhone. The keynote paved the way for the modern smartphone we all rely on so heavily today. Whether you're #TeamiPhone or #TeamAndroid, there's no denying the fact that it really did "change everything" and totally changed the way we would interact, not only with our smartphones, but the Internet and social communication altogether.

I truly miss the iPod Nano. Shame they cut support and won't make anymore. I know you can listen to music on your phone and that's how most people do it now but there was just something about having a dedicated music player like the walkman and nano that was special. (Plus saves on Battery for your main phone!)

I loved my 6th Gen Nano. I am starting to move away from streaming services and buying physical again and if CD ripping and syncing with my iPhone, it did feel better having a dedicated music player.

Like so many things with Apple, the iPhone was far from the first of its kind but it's probably fair to say that it was the first mass market smartphone that was aimed at the general person in the street and refined and usable for them to use. I remember reading somewhere that the first internal versions of Android were far closer to Blackberry than what they ended up on and when the Android founders saw the keynote above, they changed course radically.

 

Of course, 16 years down the line and practically every smartphone out there is a massive glass slab without very much to differentiate between them, so ho-hum

There's a valid argument however, that phones before the iPhone very much focused on the physical keyboard (QWERTY or T9) with a tiny screen, as opposed to the full glass screen, post iPhone. Yes, Apple do like to sugar coat and claim their innovation is better than most/all, but I'd say the evidence is pretty clear in this innovation, that Apple at least did it first and forced everyone else to follow suit.
