I'm after a laptop of home use and as I will be paying for it myself I don't want to pay too much. It will be used mainly for web, email, MS Office, bit of Dreamweaver, holding and editing the family photos, and maybe movie editing but only if is capable. I don't want to pay for a 'top of the range' model just because I want to edit movies.

What should I go for?

We also found that with Acer. Toshiba where shocking, we had some L40 laptops and they keys where shoddy and genuinely just falling off. We were accused of ripping the keys of to get our moneys worth from the extra warranty.

Stay away from Samsung interms of after sales. They're tech 'support' is rubbish!! Ring up with a fault to get fixed under warrenty and ALWAYS and WITHOUT fail get told that they can't get through to technical and someone will ring us back within 4 hours (which rarely happens). Then we have to go through the troubleshooting rubbish then get the numbers we need. Then WE have to ring up UPS to arrange a collection.

The kit is quite good, just their support is dire.

I find Lenovo are excellent for aftersales. Fault recording is done online and normally within an hour you get a rep ringing to confirm the problem, Next day an engineer is sent out. No fuss they just get it sorted. This is one of the main reasons I buy lenovo over the competitors.
