coolhands Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Whenever we install a new release it always pops up an old What's New in this release splashscreen / document from 2019. I have the Autumn 2022 one ready so where can I replace the old one so this time everyone gets the correct item!? ie where is it stored.
rush_tech Posted November 23, 2022 Posted November 23, 2022 Try the documentation folder in the SIMS directory that's where ours is
Esteban_Child_of_the_Sun Posted November 24, 2022 Posted November 24, 2022 If you look in the file C:\Windows\SIMS.ini on the machine you are running SIMS from. There is a line that starts SIMSDirectory=. If you go to the location after the = there should be a sub-folder called Documentation. That is where each machine looks for the release notes. If that parameter is configured differently on your SIMS server to your workstation than the new documents will be placed in the server's defined location after each upgrade.
coolhands Posted November 29, 2022 Author Posted November 29, 2022 Thanks Esteban. In that folder on the sims server I can see the new notes (see pic), but also there are older pdf's (What'sNew_...) in there too. So how does it know which one is going to be displayed? Does it work off title / date / or what. Should I just delete the old pdfs. Also, in my own PC the path is different and the pdf documents inside are as below: So even if I do what you suggest, how can I ensure all the other users in the school get the correct item? thanks
Esteban_Child_of_the_Sun Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 I needed to update my test system to Autumn anyway so I deleted all the files in my documentation folder so the upgrade would re-create any that were needed. Here are the ones it put back in as part of the upgrade When I first went into SIMS it opened file:///S:/SIMS/Documentation/WhatsNew_main_eng_sec.pdf so I guess it is hard codes to open the version that is relevant to your database settings.
coolhands Posted July 20, 2023 Author Posted July 20, 2023 (edited) hi Just top bump this up apparently there is no whatsnew pdf anymore it's all contained in some giant webpage link. So I'm going to have to delete the WhatsNew_main_Eng_sec.pdf from the D:\SIMSDATA\SIMS\Documentation folder as it still pops up with the new summer release. But I'm not sure how staff are meant to get the link below to be able to read what's new - there doesn't seem to be any talk about this. what's more I can't delete the pdf from that folder as it's 'in use' ie someone has it open I suppose. So no method of stopping staff getting the pop up to this old document! https://parentpaygroup.service-now.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0052249&sys_kb_id=309d1ed61b7b2950455842a7b04bcb5d&spa=1 Edited July 20, 2023 by coolhands
clareq Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 I raised a call about this with ESS because all staff were getting an outdated pdf every time I updated SIMS. I was advised to simply rename the S:\SIMS\documentation folder. As most staff didn't notice it was a 2019 document I doubt it was being read.
coolhands Posted July 20, 2023 Author Posted July 20, 2023 good idea thanks but won't let me rename the folder as a file is open....!
clareq Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 OK, on the SIMS server, go to computer management, shared Folders, Open Files. Find the pdf in the list, highlight, right click, Close File.
