Multiple Domains on Same Netowork

is this possible ? It's for a Domain Controller migration. We'd like to keep the existing domain up and running for fallback purposes, and gradually migrate people onto the new Domain. Obviously need to ensure DHCP doesn't duplicate IP addresses (intend to set ranges for this) - but does anything stop me doing this ?

We certainly used to have our Admin and Curriculum domains on the same infrastructure - however users didn't migrate between them. Admin users logged onto Admin machines and curriculum users onto curriculum machines. As long as your users always use the same computers and aren't moving around it should work, otherwise you're going to get a lot of lost files!

You can run multiple domains on the network, you can create a Trust between the domains to allow users to authenticate between them.

 

Ideally, you should have both controller on the same domain, migrate the services over and decommission the old controller.

 

You cannot however run 2 DHCP servers on the same open network, it will cause havoc! Keep DHCP on one server, DNS on both with forwarders to the DHCP server if that holds the broadband connection. DHCP is an easy thing to migrate from one server to the new one, takes no time at all.

Ive done projects just like this, but with ~100 source domains so yes this is doable. If you real need to do it is another question or is the belief the old domain is somehow irretrievably broken and the new shiny one will be so much better, just because...

Current server is Win2000. Plan was to build a new server (with up to date OS) as DC, create a new domain on it and migrate users over by allowing them to log onto new Domain, whilst still having old one available as a back up.

Why not just build new server (maybe not quite the newest OS,) and join to existing domain. DC Promo it to make it a domain controller in exisitng domain. Transfer FSMO rules and dc-promo-down old server. If needed repeat process with newest OS.. All accounts and policies maintained quite happily
