Hi ,

 

Kinda annoying with my current broadband being such a low speed.

 

Was looking at FTTP On-demand via BT , Which they charge you quite a bit for running the fibre to your home.

 

What i am interested in is how this works ? Foreach FTTP customer do they run individual fibre cables back to the exchange ? Only reason i ask is a school 5 roads away has FTTP , Have they literally ran a cable from the exchange direct to this customer ? or is there a way to patch in on this saving costs on the long run ( i assume they use multi core fibre ).

FTTP (fibre to the premesis - often also called FTTH, fibre to the home) is a direct fibre run from the cab to the building/premesis. For fibre connections to the cab only this is referenced as FTTC (fibre to the cab), which will be then a copper cable run from the cab to the premesis/home.

 

So to answer your question, if the school have a FTTP connection, they have a specific fibre line ran from the cab to the school, only to be used by them.

Gavered as much as i have just undertaken another internet connection on our schools leased line, which utilizes more of the cores on the existing cable.

 

So , Are you saying that its the distance from the cab to the home that should be taken in consideration ? and not Exchange to the home.

 

Im wondering if the cab needs to be "Enabled" for FTTP , by them running more infrastructure to it

Had to do a Desk survey then pay for a field survey to get the actual cost but wasn't worth it in the end as the could only offer 330 / 50 at our location worth checking what FTTPOD you can get at https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/ just holding out now for normal FTTP due in 2026 haha ;)

I believe so, though my knowledge on the subject is pretty limited, though I believe distance from the exchange (or even cab) doesn't matter anywhere near as much with FTTP as traditional copper (or FTTC).

 

Also yes, the cab would need to be fibre ready, then at least FTTC can be used. You'd need to confirm with the ISP whether your building can receive FTTP.

 

Are you able to look at other ISPs? Such as Virgin or even Dark Fibre (effetively a company using a leased line, kind of like Sky using BT/Open Reach's infrastructure).

Cost wise i think i would be better off doing the following , this isnt my "Forever" home so dont want to spend lots on infrastructure costing.

 

I currently have a 30mbit BT Line and a UNIFI Pro Dream Machine

 

I could potentially buy a V1 Starlink kit , and have dual WAN and route most of my traffic for my devices through the starlink.

 

e.g. My main PC can be on the BT link as thats what i require lower latency on , But my few servers , Ring system , Wifi could be sent via the starlink.

So I basically just got FTTP installed by the R100 program in Scotland but I too was facing getting FTTPoD before the gov decided to do it.

The 330/50 speed you see for FTTPoD is not the expected max speed, basically its the default number shown for FTTPoD in the Openreach database. The hugely hugely vast amount of people who actually get FTTP put into their street will get 1000/220 max. The ones on 330/50 are households who generally got it years ago and have an ECI based system.

 

The BT Wholesale page shows whats where but the page to check is actually: https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/ultrafast-full-fibre-broadband which will give you a better idea of what may/may not come. Once the work is done you can then check the wholesale page.

 

If you order FTTPoD you have to use a company who supports that type of order, aka someone like Cerberus. They will do an estimate based on a desktop (aka computer says this) survey and the price given can be off the mark by a large amount both lower, and more likely, higher. Next you order a real survey which gives you a hard quote, its £290+VAT and after they give you a quote you have 30 days to decide, that £290 is taken off the total.

They will reduce you cost a bit depending on how many houses will be served/passed by your CBT (the bit in the street) but dont expect it to be many as its not a simple case of the number of houses on the street or even how the fibre runs.

The distance is based on running fibre not from a FTTC but from an Openreach Fibre node and these are not on the street so there is no way to know where the nearest is I believe. Its basically the backhaul fibre to the exchange.

 

So if you go ahead you have to pay Cerberus for the install and you have to sign up to them and they usually cost more than other ISP's as well. I believe it used to be a 12 month contract but now its 24 although cheaper per month. You can get other houses to come in the cost but simply put if they dont help pay and you order, ANY other house served by that CBT can just order from any ISP they want and get the benefit of your order.

Depending on the area of the country you're in, 5G might be a cheaper / available option - I've been using Three's 5G home broadband service for several years now, it handles general internet access for two people quite capably, although I'd guess latency is going to be higher than other options. Depending on what you're doing server-side, might it be cheaper to move to hosted services rather than host them yourself?
