[sims] Exporting linked Documents

We have been asked to export linked documents from SIMs. These files are obviously password protected.

 

We have been told Salamander or Recordlink can do this?

 

Any advice or guidance?

Salamander have a tool that does it, although I think they only offer it to current customers. For us in the end we realised most of the linked documents weren't worth moving over to the new MIS and we just have them sat on the mothballed Sims server for archive purposes.

Salmander tool is brilliant, very quick and easy to do.

 

Although I echo what is said above, i've never actually needed them once we moved MIS.

 

Bromcom doesnt need extra documents, as it has many of those features built in such as medical records.

So testing Salamander, and it extracts the files as XML. I am guessing these cannot be converted into word?

 

They are then uploaded to the new MIS?

I think the XML files are compatible with word. Just open them in word to test out, or batch rename to docx.

 

We did not import the linked documents into Bromcom, thats a really bad idea which would bloat the new system.

 

We kept them in a archive on our old file system. I've never used them and they were soon forgotten about by staff. I still keep a copy just in case.

I've just looked up my notes as we moved from SIMS to Bromcom in March, and I used Salamander to move linked documents. I think the switch in the command referring to converting word to PDF might be what you want. Seems I did a run just for reports, and then did another run for all other linked documents, likely because I wanted to keep the .docx format for things that weren't reports. The Pupil in Document Name switch was to allow importing to correct students on the bromcom side (although I still had to rename files using regex to simplify the overly long filenames).

We have taken the plunge and gone for Salamander. For some reason it only takes 'current' students and not previous students who are still on sims.

 

I am using /allpupiltypes but that doesn't seem to work.

 

I am also trying /loadbyyears that also doesn't work.

 

The parameters aren't case sensitive?

I didn't use those myself, but I'd imagine it'll be safer doing one with the /leavers tag instead on a 2nd run, as more likely to have problems with that one if your list of leavers was anything as large as ours. I'm also wondering if the /loadbyyears switch will have issues if running it with all pupil types or leavers, given it's ambigious what year they should be classified as.

 

If you are moving to Bromcom, be wary you probably don't want to upload leaver docs, as you only get limited space on the cloud provision, and I understand some schools fill it up very quickly.

Hi Jemal,

Thank you for your comments regarding space for documents. Its 10Gb for a secondary school and 3gb for a primary as standard which is usually enough for most schools however, you have the option to purchase additional storage if required.
