Hi all, bit of a strange request. I work at a school (non tech roll) and have been given a switch from the it department for my son who wants to get in to networking. Can I ask if anyone knows any online tutorials that he can learn from?

He did say he want to learn how to lock it so only his laptop MAC address name (is that right) will work on it.

Thank you.

Hi Mick

There aren't many courses directed at HP "operating system" command line stuff, but Cisco stuff is very similar usually in commands and syntax.

It's probably worth having a look on site like this one, https://www.udemy.com/course/cool-cisco-ios-commands-master-cli-tips-cli-like-a-boss-time-saving/, to find suitable courses.

He might find it better to use a program called "Packet Tracer" on which you can setup network simulations with various bits of Cisco kit and configure them as you would a normal switch.

More info here about Packet Tracer: https://www.netacad.com/courses/packet-tracer

In general just download the manual, read it all, look up all the stuff you don't understand

Any course on networking covers the theory, the specific commands for any specific switch will be found in the manual once you know what it means.
