Hi all,

Really struggling to get my head around the best way to achieve a weekly / monthly / termly full backup on USB drive using Veeam. I looked into Backup Copies but can't find a way to manually trigger these which is what I would like (switch the drive on Friday, hit go, know we have a current backup). VeeamZip looks OK but not sure it does de-dupe and I seem to need to turn on encryption each time it is run - want to minimise the risk of this happening. At present I have settled on:

  • Backup repo set as rotating drives
  • New job created specifically for USB Drives
  • Retention period for weekly jobs set to 8 days, monthly to 32 days to prevent me accidentally over-writing on the same media
  • Job set as Incremental - but with create new active backups set as weekly on Sun - Mon (every day)
  • No schedule - manual run when I know the drives have been switched

I think this should give me a new active full weekly every time and, if I am not mistaken, remove the old backups.

If there is a better way please let me know - it seems very complicated to complete such a simple take as taking a full backup.

I've recently copied the backup files to a USB drive for an off site (air gap) backup. Takes a while to copy the files, a few terabytes. I also copied the licence file and the installation ISO to the USB drive.

I installed Veeam onto an old laptop (Windows 10), attached the USB drive and was able to browse the copied backup files. I couldn't restore cos I needed to install Veeam on a server OS.

Within Veeam you can do a one off backup to USB.

Is there any reason not to do this?
